Soft Contact Lenses and Ortho-K Prescriptions

Did you know your contact lens prescription differs from your eyeglass prescription? It requires different measurements to achieve the right fit for your unique eyes.

In a contact lens exam, Dr. Duong will assess your needs and recommend the contact lens options that suit your vision and lifestyle. That can mean soft contacts, RGP lenses, toric, multifocal, or other specialized lenses.

For our nearsighted patients, we offer orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses. These contacts are worn overnight, then you remove them in the morning to enjoy clear vision—no glasses needed (except for sunglasses, of course!).

What to Expect in Your Contact Lens Exam

In your contact lens exam, we’ll check your visual acuity, measure the curvature of your cornea, evaluate your tear film, and discuss your lifestyle and vision goals.

We’ll then conduct a trial fitting with lenses to assess your comfort and vision. We can also provide directions on inserting, removing, and caring for your new lenses.

Specialty Contact Lenses

Everyone’s eyes are unique, and we take that to heart when helping you find the right contact lenses. We offer a range of specialty contact lenses to address your vision needs, including:

  • Soft contacts are the most common type and many people find them very comfortable and easy to wear.
  • Multifocal contacts are designed for individuals with presbyopia, providing clear vision at all distances.
  • Toric lenses correct astigmatism, a common refractive error that causes blurry or distorted vision.
  • Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses can provide extra-sharp vision compared to soft contacts, but it may take a little longer for some people to get used to wearing them.
  • Ortho-k, also known as overnight vision correction or corneal refractive therapy (CRT), is a special contact lens designed for nearsightedness in adults, children, and teens.

Ortho-K for Myopia Management in Children

Ortho-k can be a fantastic option for managing myopia (nearsightedness) in children as young as 8.

It offers a non-surgical approach to slowing down the progression of nearsightedness, protecting your child’s eyesight from worsening as they grow. By wearing ortho-k lenses overnight, your child can experience clear vision during the day without the hassle of glasses or contacts.

Our young patients who are highly active in sports or other activities can significantly benefit from the freedom of ortho-k.

Ortho-K for Vision Correction in Adults

Ortho-k lenses are also an excellent option for nearsighted adults seeking freedom from glasses or contacts during the day.

We stock and fit Paragon CRT lenses. Unlike regular soft contacts worn during the day, CRT (corneal refractive therapy, another term for ortho-k) lenses are worn at night. They’re made of a rigid material that gently and temporarily reshapes the curve of the front part of the eye while you sleep.

In the morning, you remove your lenses and get on with your day.

Taking Care of Your Contact Lenses

When wearing contact lenses, it’s worth taking a few minutes every day to make sure you’re cleaning your lenses properly—proper care helps you avoid discomfort or even an eye infection.

Here are some of our top tips for taking care of your contacts:

  • Always wash your hands thoroughly before handling your contacts.
  • Clean your lenses daily using the recommended solutions, and never use tap water.
  • Replace your lenses according to the prescribed schedule.
  • For daytime contacts, always remove them while sleeping unless otherwise directed. Likewise, wearing your ortho-k lenses during the day is unnecessary.
  • Keep up with your regular eye exam schedule to stay on top of any changes in your vision or eye comfort.
