Unmanaged myopia can worsen over time, leading to increased dependence on corrective lenses. More importantly, any amount of nearsightedness increases the risk of developing serious eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
By actively managing your child’s myopia with ortho-k, we can help protect your child’s long-term eye health and vision.
What to Expect in Your Child’s Ortho-K Appointment
Typically, your child’s ortho-k appointment will follow these general steps:
The Eye Exam
Dr. Duong will examine their eyes to determine the refractive error of the cornea and determine whether ortho-k is a good fit for their age and lifestyle. We’ll proceed to the fitting if we have the correct prescription lenses on hand. Otherwise, we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment for the fitting.
The Fitting
Dr. Duong will help you and your child learn to insert the ortho-k lenses into their eyes. It can take a bit of getting used to at first, but children age 8 and older typically learn how to do it fairly quickly.
Adjustment Phase
For the next week or two, your child will use their new ortho-k contacts during sleep for at least 6–8 hours per night. If they need vision correction, they can wear their regular glasses or disposable soft contacts during this time.
After this adjustment period, they can stop wearing any daytime corrective lenses as the ortho-k overnight wear will set them up for clear vision all day long.
How Does Ortho-K Work?
Ortho-k uses specially designed gas-permeable contact lenses worn overnight. While your child sleeps, these lenses gently reshape the cornea, the eye’s clear front surface. This reshaping temporarily corrects the refractive error, allowing for clear vision throughout the following day without needing glasses or contact lenses.
For myopia management, ortho-k also has the added benefit of slowing down the elongation of the eye, which is the underlying cause of progressive nearsightedness.
We’ll schedule follow-up appointments with you and your child to monitor the effectiveness of ortho-k and make any adjustments needed.
Is Ortho-K Right for My Child?
